The Azar oil field, located within the Anaran exploratory block in Ilam Province, lies along the Iran-Iraq border. With approximately one-third of its reserves situated in Iran and the remainder in Iraq, the field plays a critical role in Iran’s oil industry. Despite its geological complexities, Azar has emerged as a symbol of engineering resilience and strategic importance in the region.
Nestled within the Zagros fold belt, the Azar oil field is renowned for its challenging geological structure, one of the most complex in the region. This shared border field exemplifies the significance of cross-border oil resources, with its development requiring advanced technical expertise and robust management strategies.
The Azar oil field’s development has been marked by a series of milestones. The field’s master development plan included the drilling of 19 wells, construction of surface facilities, and pipeline infrastructure to enable efficient production and transportation.
A significant achievement occurred in March 2017 (Esfand 1395), when early production of 30,000 barrels per day was realized through the tireless efforts of the Sarvak Azar Engineering and Development Company (SAED), part of the OIEC Group. Full-scale development culminated in March 2021 (Esfand 1399), with an official inauguration by the President of Iran, marking a major milestone in the country’s oil industry.
The Azar oil field is designed to produce:
• Crude Oil: 65,000 barrels per day (bpd).
• Natural Gas: 78 million cubic feet per day (mcf/d).
The associated infrastructure ensures seamless processing and transportation, maximizing the field’s output potential while maintaining environmental and operational safety.
The development of the Azar oil field included several significant projects:
The field’s development was carried out under a buyback contract, with the Oil Industries Engineering and Construction Company (OIEC) taking on a role beyond that of a traditional contractor. This project was executed under the supervision of the National Iranian Oil Engineering and Development Company (MATN), with contributions from a consortium comprising the Ahdaf Investment Company and OIEC.

Enhancing Iran’s energy security and export potential
Creating employment opportunities for local residents and fostering economic development in Ilam Province.
Building regional infrastructure to support long-term operations and community needs.
Recording an impressive 75 million man-hours without a lost-time incident, setting a benchmark for safety and efficiency in the industry.
Environmental sustainability and social responsibility were key priorities throughout the development of the Azar oil field. The project has adhered to strict environmental standards while also promoting local development through job creation and infrastructure enhancement.
The Azar oil field stands as a testament to Iran's capability to overcome geological and operational challenges. Through strategic investments, technological advancements, and a commitment to sustainability, the field has become a cornerstone of Iran's oil production capabilities. Its successful development serves as a benchmark for future projects, demonstrating the synergy between national interests, local benefits, and operational excellence.
