Sohrab Oil Field

Sohrab Oil Field

The Sohrab Oil Field is located in Khuzestan Province, near the western border of Iran with Iraq. This field is of great importance to Iran’s energy sector due to its geographical position, providing significant economic value to the country, especially in the Khuzestan region. The proximity of the Sohrab field to the Iraq border and several shared oil fields necessitates precise management to maximize sustainable resource extraction.

The Sohrab Oil Field first garnered attention in the late 20th century. Initial explorations revealed evidence of oil reserves at various depths. Early discoveries indicated that the Sohrab field could contain substantial reserves of light and medium crude oil, making it commercially attractive and valuable for global markets. These discoveries led to the development of new projects in the area, initiating plans for the exploitation of the field using modern technologies and equipment.

Iran, aiming for energy self-sufficiency and reducing dependency on imported advanced technologies, has outlined specific plans for the development of the Sohrab field. Given the field's unique position and the context of sanctions, Iran emphasizes utilizing domestic capabilities and local expertise. This strategy focuses on employing indigenous technologies and the skills of Iranian engineers to drive the field's development.

Production Capacity of the Sohrab Field

The Sohrab field currently boasts a significant daily production capacity, which is expected to increase sustainably through further development and the application of modern technologies. The current production capacity of the Sohrab field is continuously rising due to the implementation of advanced drilling techniques and gas and water injection methods to enhance recovery rates. Iran seeks to increase the number of drilled wells in the Sohrab field to achieve a stable and economically viable production level. Estimates indicate that with the execution of new developmental phases in this field, daily production capacity could increase by several thousand barrels. This boost in capacity will not only help Iran meet its domestic energy needs but also provide greater opportunities for exporting oil to global markets.

Oil Quality and Characteristics of Production

One of the notable features of the Sohrab field is the high quality of crude oil produced. The oil from this field is classified as light and medium crude, possessing favorable chemical compositions and a high API degree. These characteristics make the oil produced from Sohrab attractive for refineries and desirable for international markets. The high API degree contributes to the oil being more efficient for refining processes, generating higher added value.

In general, the light and medium crude oil produced from the Sohrab field possesses the following characteristics:
